Welcome to Custer Christiansen Mortuary - West Covina
The property that is now occupied by our West Covina mortuary was originally one of the foremost horse ranches in the area. It served the community in that capacity until the 1930’s when it was purchased by Don Means and transformed into Means Funeral Parlor.
The first floor of the ranch house was for the mortuary and the second floor was the living quarters for the family, which was common that day and age, and led to the term “Funeral Home”. The original building has been remodeled and added to over the years. This has included a large chapel that can accommodate 250 people and replacing the façade that now reflects a traditional Colonial style, much like that of her sister mortuary in Covina.
After a name change to Valley Mortuary, the business was sold to Reverend and Mrs. Gunn, who at that time were the owners of Custer Christiansen Mortuary in Covina. This joining only added more rich history to Valley Mortuaries already illustrious past.
Over the years the community of West Covina has seen transformation and change, transformation of size and ethnic diversity, change of economic expansion and borders. These things are no more evident than in the history of this mortuary. As a member of the Custer Christiansen family we only add more fabric to the historical blanket that has been woven in this community. As we continue to serve the people of West Covina with the same compassionate and quality service that Don Means provided in the past, we will be prepared to serve this community through whatever changes it may face in the future.
